Years ago, a man name Cooper started Cherokee Village. The lakes were dug and amenities and roads were built. This was the same thing as Disneyland. He owned and ran everything. He made the rules. If you buy property, you have to abide by the rules. Everything went well for a while, lots were selling homes built were selling. Everybody was making money and all was good. After making a small fortune, things began to slow, he helped his friends the sewer operation, water company, real estate company, and created lifetime appointed directors to take care of the amenities. There were a lot of nuts and bolts, but fees were making the good old boys happy. When they needed or just wanted more money, they just raised fees. Folks here got unhappy, and wanted to guide the community, so they decided to start a city. The city would get lots of money from SID to take care of the golf courses, roads and pool and a few other things. The parts they gave the city were their headaches. They never have given the city enough money to do things right, and so the place began to deteriorate. The good old boys at SID still took money for telling people how to live. if they didn't feel they had enough money, they just came up with new and larger fees. The city doesn't have enough money, so the roads suffer, the pool suffers, the Omaha center building, and who knows what else like city equipment. Because contracts were made with lot buyers, a bill of assurance was created to guarantee the lot and home owners. things would stay the same forever. City says they cant rezone or change things because of the bill of assurance. It could be changed, but what you would have to do just wouldn't be worth it. It would be next to impossible. to change.......OK so that brings us to where we are now, with all kinds of issues, without the ability to fix, mainly because of lack of money. The city is stuck. WHAT CAN WE DO. ?????.......We have a tremendous amount of beauty here, rivers and lakes to use, and lots of land. SID in my opinion is taking a lot of money and leaves the city CRUMBS...We could get rid of SID, and let the city do everything that needs done. Another thought is legislation to change SID from what it is to a 7 member elected board. Give the folks here the right to vote. and control their own destiny. With a restructured SID, things could work. Example, stop paying the Water company $14,000. a month to check fire hydrants and let the city fire dept do it, and who knows where we would find money that SID isnt telling us about. OR. LET THE CITY DO IT ALL AND GIVE THEM ALL THE MONEY. They are elected , they can be voted out if they dont do a good job. There are people here who have money and could make things happen, but they would have to be comfortable with the city and the way they operate. 1 idea that I had a long time ago was have our elected officials all together go to the Governor and have him put a trade school here and fund it. More people coming here with jobs and money. Teach people about a new better way of life. Bill Matselboba
